Walking from the Zócalo to the cliff divers or La Quebrada.
From the church at the Zócalo it is about a 15 minute walk to the cliff divers or La Quebrada however don't rush it as it is all uphill so take your time as I did and get some photos of the traditional buildings along the way.
When standing in front of the church go directly to your left on Hidalgo Street and walk for about 5-7 minutes. If you are standing where I was when the photos was taken of the church go strait on Hidalgo for about 5-7 minutes... see photo number 1.
You will pass 3 blocks and 2 streets when you come to a fork in the street… going left down Tte. José Azueta with take you back to the main street or The Costera so you want to go strait to La Quebrada on Adolfa López Mateos which from here is uphill… photo number 2… now don't let the picture fool you the hill is not that high as the buildings on top of the hill.
The next photo (number 3) shows that there are plenty of places to get water or other drinks if you forgot to pack something to drink…
Photo number 4 shows you that the walking is all uphill but not really that hard to do… and walking in the shade makes it a nice stroll.
Next you will come to a stop and straight in front you will see two ramps on each side of the road going up as in photo number 5… take the ramp on the right as that will take you directly to the Divers just on top of the ramp… From the fork in the road until the Cliff divers is about 400 meters or 1500 feet… so not really all the far.
BTW… you can also start at the back of the Church and take La Quebrada Street all the way from the back of the Church to the Cliff Divers… the distance is about 660 meters or 2175 feet… that is less than a Kilometer/Mile.
As soon as you get to the top of the ramp you will see the Mirador Hotel and the sign for the divers as shown here in photo number 6.
Now when you get to this point you have two or three options… option one is to go down the ramp and pay $35.00 pesos or just over $3.00 dollars as shown in photo number 7. The next photo number 9 shows you where the divers jump and the lookout point were you can see the divers. Now when a cruise ship is in town that area gets very full so try and get there early… there are some benefits to having the cruise ship in town as there are more divers when there are more people watching.
Or if you prefer to relax and sit and enjoy the show go in the La Perla restaurant (photo number 8) and here you have the option to sit and enjoy a meal or you can pay $160.00 pesos to watch the show which includes two complimentary drinks… anything from a Cerveza to Piña Colada. Sorry I should have asked what the cost was for the meal but since I had enjoyed a nice meal before I was happy with just a relaxing drink.
After the daring fantastic show the divers will come and see everyone and of course try and collect some much earned tips… and if you buy the little picture book with points of interest from Acapulco the divers will autograph it for you… I hope this information was of benefit to you and feel free to update me on anything on this page.
The divers show is at 1:00 in the afternoon and 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 and a special show with torches at 10:30.
Just a point of interest: If you take another look at photo number 9 you will see a street taking you to a great lookout point at Sinfonia del Mar and about half way up the street there are a couple of places where there you a good view of the divers… it about 240 meters or 800 feet from the divers to the lookout point. Of course a good telephoto lens of binoculars will help you get the most out of your viewing pleasure.
Now have a look at photo number 10 and you can see the great lookout point of the divers and the Mirador Hotel. When the show is over you can continue walking to the Sinfonia del Mar lookout point and depending on the time of day enjoy a fantastic unobtrusive sunset. Continue your stroll around the corner and next you will see a very quaint secluded beach area, Playa La Angosta. I cannot tell you much about the beach area as I have not spent any time there. Have a look at photo number 11.
In the background of the photo 11 you can see an orange looking building that is the Hotel Sunset Beach and beside the hotel is Las Palmas Street. Take that street one block and you will be back at the main street The Costera… from here take a taxi or bus back to Zócalo or visit another point of interest depending on how much time you have. As for me I usually take the bus and take off for Caleta beach and a couple of cold ones.
