The House of Masks or Casa de la Máscara in Spanish.
Acapulco's Home. - Acapulco's Beaches. - Acapulco's Sightseeing. - Back to 2007 trip

I had been reading about the House of Masks so in 2007 I decided to go and see the museum, unfortunately my visit was very brief. So I only got the highlights of the place, but what an interesting place. I read that they have over 500 brightly coloured masks of all different sizes and shapes. In any case they have a large display of masks that not only offer a great insight into the art of Guerrero state but the religion and culture in general as well.

The House of Masks is located a short distance from San Diego Fort. As you leave the Fort walk trough the parking lot down the street toward downtown or the Zócalo and on the right you will find the House of masks. But be careful or you will walk right by it as it really is just a house converted into a museum. If you would like to check are into some culture then a visit to the house of mask is a must.

The House of Masks offers visitors the opportunity to discover this unique artistic expression. Artisans from the State of Guerrero lead us with multicolored masks on a fantastic journey through their religion and culture, as the mask is still closely related to their traditions and dances in certain towns and villages and is considered one of the richest forms of expression in popular art in the State of Guerrero. There you will find masks of jaguars, tigers and devil like looking masks.

I understand that some are representative of those still used in such traditional ritualistic dances as "Moors and Christians" and "Battle of the Tigers." I know I will visit again next time I am in Acapulco and spend some time to learn more about the history of some of the masks and what they represent and how they are/were used.

The entrance free but a donation is suggested. They are open Mon.-Sat. 10-5. and are located at Calle Morelos s/n, Ex-Zona Militar B, a half block from Fuerte de San Diego, Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico Phone: 744/486-5577
