Pie de la Cuesta, meaning “foot of the hill” is only about 6 miles/10 km from Acapulco. It will take about 15 to 30 minutes from the main Acapulco strip, of course depending on the traffic it may take a little less or a little more. Now as far as I can tell it is north/west of Acapulco.
There is a long sandy beach about 10 miles/15 km. long facing the Ocean and on the other side of the road a freshwater lagoon ( Luguna Coyuca ) on which you can take a 2 - 3 hour boat trip.
Getting there can be just as much fun as enjoying your day in Pie de La Cuesta. There are several different ways of getting there, by bus, taxi or tour. Going by taxi will take about 15 to 30 minutes depending from what part of Acapulco you are starting from and how busy the traffic is. Taking the bus will take you about an hour to get there but if you are adventurous you may enjoy the views from your window as it makes its way down there. Taking a tour by tour guide or by taxi is at times the best way to go especially if it is you first visit to Pie de La Cuesta.
Almost 20 years ago now we took or first trip to Pie de La Cuesta, but what memories I can still remember it as it was yesterday. I was in Acapulco on my second trip with my wife Jane and her brother Tony and his wife Norma. We decided to go to Pie de La Cuesta and made arrangements with a taxi driver to give us a tour. The first place we stopped at was the corner store and picked up a few cold ones and something to snack on. Then we were on our way, stopping occasionally to take pictures as the view up to Pie de La Cuesta is just wonderful. The other thing I remember is that there were not that many places on either side of the main road going into Pie de La Cuesta.
Our first stop was at a small restaurant and with a pool, palapas and hammocks. We enjoyed a relaxing couple of hour with a corona or two and then rented/hired a small boat to go to Bird Island. All I can remember about the owner of the boat is that he looked very rugged and looked the part of a real out of the way captain. Now for the boat it selves we were not to sure if it would get us there or not.
In 2006 we again took a side trip to Pie de La Cuesta, and what a difference almost 20 years makes. There are so many more hotels, restaurants and places to take the boat ride on the Lagoon, something that we did not do this past trip but are planning on it in 2007.
After breakfast about 10:00 or so we decided to go to Pie de La Cuesta instead of back to Playa Gloria, so we asked the taxis at our hotels first but taught they wanted a little to much money and for a last minute trip I can't blame them. So we flagged or rather the next taxi that came along blew the horn pulled over and for about the fifth of the price and we were on our way. Well that was fine and dandy until we asked if they would come and get us at 4:00 pm and of course no one showed. Remember that Pie de La Cuesta is a little out of the way place so we not so easy to find a taxi back. Fortunately we got a great driver that charged us a fair price and even though we still save some money it tells me that it is better to pay a little more and get a reliable taxi that will pick you up for the way back.
For a list of reliable taxis and tours have a look at http://www.acafun.com or the TripAdvisor.com list at http://tinyurl.com/yfb7dy or http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g150787-c12729/Acapulco:Mexico:Rent.A.Car.Van.And.Driver.html I'm writing this report the beginning of November and already we have made contact with a driver to give us a tour to Pie de La Cuesta and a few other places.
Since we wanted this to be a day of relaxation we had the driver take us right to Tres Marías at Avenida Fuerza Aerea 375 Pie de la Cuesta. This restaurant is located between the beautiful Lagoon of Coyuca and Pacific Ocean Pie de la Cuesta beach. They offer an outdoor restaurant with a complete menu of Fish Quesadillas, Ceviche and the Mojarra with Spicy Shrimp. We enjoyed a great snack of shrimp and chicken dishes.
One note I need to tell you about; swimming in the Ocean though is not recommended due to the strong undertow. I know that some of the locals swim to show off their talents and of course to get a tip. On the other hand if you are into horseback riding, this is definitely the place to do it, what a place to ride on an almost deserted stretch of beach.
There is also a wonderful hotel on location if someone wanted to stay there and if we ever did decide to stay that would most likely be the place, but who knows we will find out more on our next trip in January of 2007.
Across the street on the lagoon side they have a second restaurant with a thatched roof and a real Mexican ambiance. From there you can also rent a speed boat and if I remember right do some water skiing. After settling the girls in the easy chairs on the beach at Tres Marías I took my camera and went on a road trip, by foot of course, walking about two miles or so first up the beach and then back on the road. There following photographs are only a few of the many that I have taken, but I do hope you enjoy the ones that I have here. Just a final note about Tres Marías, besides the great location and wonderful place to enjoy a quiet day the staff was second to none with a friendly smile and great service. Have a look at pictures from Tres Marías and Pie de la Cuesta
The other way to get to Pie de La Cuesta is by bus, however since I have not done that before, I decided to post some information from a TrpAdvisor.com member. Sorry I did not copy down the link and I have not found the information since.
"POINTERS FOR PIE DE LA CUESTA"
This comment is just to help out anyone who is planning to visit Acapulco and Pie de La Cuesta. My family lives in Acapulco, therefore I visit often and in many occasions have found tourist trying to get to Pie de La Cuesta with some difficulties. Pie de la Cuesta is found about 20 to 30 minutes away from the main Acapulco strip. It depends on the traffic. The options for tourist are these: taking a cab from the hotel straight to pie de la Cuesta. Hotel cabs know it's a long drive so they will charge you accordingly. It takes them a lot of their time to go to that neck of the woods so they will take advantage of it. The other way is by taking the bus. I have seen many tourists trying to do this in order to save some money. It's not a bad idea but you have to be careful not to get lost. The bus you have to take to Pie de la Cuesta is one in particular. The bus to take MUST read on its windshield 'PIE DE LA CUESTA' - 'LUCES' some will also read 'PLAYA'.
There are other buses that will also read Pie de la Cuesta but will NOT read Luces - DON'T TAKE THOSE. The reason for this is that once you get to the Pie de la Cuesta area, the road divides in two. One will drive you right through Pie De La Cuesta beach (where you want to go), but the other will take you to where the locals live and there is no beach there. Once you see that the right bus took you the right route, all you have to do is choose where you want to get off and yell BAJAN! that means "I'm getting off". The bus drivers will usually stop for you if the bus is not going too fast. The Pie de La Cuesta beach is not too far from where the roads divided so don't think you have to spend too much time on the bus after that. Remember also that the buses stop running late at night so don't go back to the hotel too late at night. I'm not too sure what time but I think is around 10 pm.
But here is some advice from another TripAdvisor.com member who lives in Acapulco… so you decide what you want to do. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g150787-i177-k652805-l3933358-Adventures_in_Acapulco_Part_Three-Acapulco_Pacific_Coast.html#3933358 if the link does not work because it is broken up and to long try http://tinyurl.com/y9s7hz
Hope this page was helpful and enjoyed it.
